Mrs. Lee's Sixth Grade
Poetry Unit

Some of the most vivid and enduring images in our society come from poetry. Who can't picture Poe's stately and ominous raven or Noyes's lace-and-jewel clad highwayman? As writers, poetry appeals to us because of the incredible freedom it gives us. We can rhyme or not. Punctuation? Capitalization? Optional! We can put our words on a line, or draw a picture with them. The only limits are those of our imaginations.

We are going to be exploring the world of poetry in this unit. There will be a combination of group and individual work, and every Friday will be our "coffee house" day. The Coffee House Day will be the day we read and share our projects and poems to each other. I will make hot chocolate, and you can bring snacks. It's open mike day!

You will be responsible for both group work and individual work during this unit. Your group presentation on Friday consists of the storyboard (either a webpage or a trifold presentation board) and the projects that the individuals in the group have done about the poem you chose to storyboard. One personal poem will be due per week which must have at least one of the poetic devices/elements in it that was found in the poem you helped to storyboard. (Some directions for form poems are included on the Individual Poems page. You are NOT required to use these - they are just suggestions.) You are welcome to share your personal poems during the Coffee House Day.
