Design and make a timeline of the history of the exploration of Antarctica.Use butcher paper or an equivalent and illustrate it with pictures, drawings, or symbols. The timeline should cover at least one wall. Make sure it can be seen from a distance. A good place to start is http://www.south-pole.com/p0000052.htm Firsts: Decades after the race is over, there is still a huge controversy over who reached the South Pole first. Research the controversy and decide. Display the pros and cons for each argument, and the reasons for your decision. Also make a display illustrating the other firsts - first women to reach the South Pole, first women to cross the continent, first research station set up, etc. Find out how the world decided who "owns" Antarctica. What treaties have been sign and by whom? Who decides what goes on there? Who decides which countries can set up research stations? Who pays? Who flies in and out? A similar problem of "ownership" comes up with the moon. Research how the nations of the world propose to resolve this problem. How are the proposed solutions similar to what happened in Antartica? How are they different? Which do you think that is a good solution? Why? Should the U.S. sign the Moon Treaty? Extra credit - propose an alternate solution that is more fair and explain why. ![]() email us |
