Mrs. Lee's Sixth Grade Class Presents their

"Where I'm From"
Poems

 adapted from a poem by
George Ella Lyons

On September 11, 2002, my students wanted to write something positive and celebrate both the diversity and the unity of our classroom community. After reading the poem "Where I'm From," they thought that poetry would be a good way to do this. They wrote poems about their families and the families' cultures - special smells and celebrations that remind them of where they're from. They included images from summer activities that they all shared and travels to family "back home." What emerged astonished me with its vividness and love. We hope you enjoy them as we did.

 Where We're From

I am from falafel, humus, pita, and hallah
I’m from Greece, Israel, and Brazil
I am from turn-off-the-computer-right-now-and-go-to-bed!

I am from the hot sun and calm seas
I am from the land where Samba rules
I am from the Wailing Wall and the Holy Land
Where Moses rested his eyes

I am from Hebrew and Portuguese and Greek
That is where I am from

 I am from many states
Nights in the tent,
from snowy soil,
and days listening to the crashing waves
I'm from filet and baked potatoes
and swings swaying in the wind

From the Earthquake State
and holding the cat
From cranberries on a crowded table
to traveling in the car
My birthday cakes - so good -
and falling asleep when I was small on Christmas Eve in church
That's where I'm from

By Melissa M.

(Taken by a poem By George Ella Lyons)

I am from Schnitzel
Chocolate, and Flame on Christmas
I am from snow in Germany, and
"Get ready we're leaving in ten minutes"
I am from the shoe in front of my
Door on St. Nick's Day, chocolate, and
Making fireworks on New Year's in Germany

I am from candles
And cake on birthdays
I am from a reef with candles on
The four weeks of Christmas
I am from green on St. Patrick's Day,
Costumes on Halloween,
And "Did you finish your homework yet?"

I am from red,
White, and blue Sept. 11
I am from eggs hidden
On Easter, and tricks
On April Fools
I am from fireworks on July 4
And I am half-German.
